दया तो आत्मा का स्वभाव है, हर जीव में पाया जाता है, अपने बच्चों के प्रति हिंसक जानवरों तक में। जैसे-जैसे आत्मा विशुद्ध होती जाती है, पहले मनुष्यों पर दया, फिर जानवरों, कीड़े मकोड़ों, अंत में सूक्ष्म जीवों पर भी।
