भय अपरिचित वस्तुओं, स्थान या व्यक्ति से ही होता है जैसे रस्सी को भी अनजाने में सांप मानने लगते हैं। सबसे अपरिचित आत्मा है इसीलिए हमको उससे सबसे ज्यादा भय आत्मा से ही लगता है। इसी कारण हम एकत्व, स्वतंत्रता प्राप्त नहीं कर पाए।
