आदिपुराण में भरत के अशुभ स्वप्न के लिये शांतिधारा करने का वर्णन आता है । बाद में माघनंदी कृत अभिषेक पाठ का वर्णन आता है । पहले शांतिधारा यंत्रों पर होती थी, भगवान से कामना नहीं करते थे ।
