अधिकतर आचार्यों ने 8 समय बताया है ( 4 समय का विस्तार + 4 समय संकुचन )। पर कुछ आचार्यों ने 7 समय भी बताया है, आठवां समय तो शरीर में प्रवेश करने का है ,जैसे ३ मोड़े में ३ समय लिये ।
