निर्जरा का कारण ध्यान है, केवली के निर्जरा तो होती है । पर ध्यान मन से होता है और केवली के भाव मन होता नहीं है, इसलिये केवली के 13 वें और 14 वें गुणस्थानों में उपचार से निर्जरा मानी है ।
